Black Widow, Agent of SHIELD

blackwidowgreytonedI wanted to do something fun and topical and right now, what’s more topical than the Avengers movie?! Can’t believe how well it’s done! I’m SO happy to see another comic book movie climb to the top of the list of all-time-money-making films. I’m thrilled that it was a fun, enjoyable movie that was a great payoff to the previous Avenger tie-in movies. Honestly, up to this point, I was really worried. Especially with big ensemble cast like this, I was curious how balancing their screen time would go. And I gotta say, I was very satisfied with the results — so satisfied that I’ve seen it three times in the theater!

Thought I’d take a stab at drawing Natalia Romanov, the Black Widow. I’m happy they gave her more depth and showed how she’s an effective agent in the field with her interrogation tactics. Also thought it was cool how they kept her “spidery” and she would attack her opponents by climbing over them while assaulting them. And when she’s on the defensive, she uses her smaller stature to slide between and duck under larger objects – like a spider does.

After doing the line art, I thought I’d have fun rendering with warm and cool copic markers. I’m happy with the results. I scanned in the line art before I graytoned it, so gonna do some coloring on Photoshop and will post that when I’m done.

Oh and in a very unexpected surprise, this sketch was shown in Multiversity Comics’ Art of the Week column for 5/30/12! If you click on the link, you can also see studiomate Vincent Kukua’s illustration of Huntress right before my Black Widow!
